Last Updated on Oct 12, 2014

If your kids come home from school starving, why not work a little math practice into a healthy snack? With these 1st grade math worksheets, you can encourage healthy eating habits while reinforcing important math concepts. These are easy to do and at the same time fun for your child.

Make a Fruit Bar Graph

Bar graphs are fun and are a vital part of the first grade math curriculum. If you are looking for 1st grade math worksheets that reinforce healthy eating behaviors, consider making a bar graph using fruit. Here’s how you can do it.

First, give your child a bowl of mixed fruit or mixed berries. Then, before you let them eat it, have them count each type of fruit. Next, give them a bar graph. Have them fill in the graph for each type of fruit. Compare the data by asking which one you have the most of and the least of.

Fruit Addition and Subtraction

If your child is still in need of manipulative when doing 1st grade math worksheets for addition or subtraction, berries make great, and tasty, manipulative. Give your child enough berries for the problems on the worksheet, then let them use the berries to figure out the answer. Simple, and delicious, this will help reinforce the math facts on the worksheet.

Tally Marks Worksheet

In first grade, tally marks are an important concept. Give your child a pile of fruit slices, and have him count them. Then, have him tally the number before eating. Remind him that groups of five get the slash mark. You can repeat this with different types of fruit until the concept is reinforced.

Equal Groups

First graders don’t do division, but they can learn basic concepts that will evolve into division in the future. These simple 1st grade math worksheets encourage children to divide items into two equal groups. Setup is simple. Give your child a worksheet with two squares or two circles on it. Then, give him a handful of fruit, counting out an even number. Before eating, have him divide them into two equal groups.
