How Many Pints in a Quart?

By Shelly Wyramon

Pints and quarts are customary measurements of liquid. We can use a conversion chart to determine how many pints are in a quart.

Why is this concept useful?

Measurements of pints and quarts are used in the United States for liquids. Most juice cartons in the United States are 1 quart.

Where does this concept fit into the curriculum?

Introduced in 4th Grade

How can we use the concept:

The following conversion chart is helpful when converting from pints to quarts:

Conversion of Standard Units

1 cup = 8 fluid ounces

1 pint = 2 cups

1 quart = 2 pints

1 gallon = 4 quarts

From this chart, we can see that 1 quart = 2 pints. We can use this information to determine other problems that involve converting from quarts to pints, or from pints to quarts.

Sample Math Problems

1. Find how many pints are in 3 quarts.

Solution:

Using the conversion chart, we know that 1 quart = 2 pints.

2 quarts would equal 4 pints, and 3 quarts would equal 6 pints.

3 quarts = 6 pints

2. Which sign makes the following true?

2 quarts 2 pints

A. >

B. <

C. =

Solution:

We know that 1 quart equals 2 pints, and 2 quarts = 4 pints, so the correct sign would be A. >

2 quarts > 2 pints

3. Jane used 2 pints of lemon juice for her lemonade. Carrie used 1 quart of lemon juice for her lemonade. Who used the most lemon juice?

A. Jane
B. Carrie
C. Both used the same amount of lemon juice

Solution:

Using the conversion chart, we know that 1 quart = 2 pints. Since these measurements are equal, the correct answer is C. Both used the same amount of juice.

4. Tom divides 8 quarts of juice evenly into 8 bottles. How many pints of juice are in each bottle?

Solution:

1 quart = 2 pints

so

8 quarts = 16 pints

16 pints divided into 8 bottles = 2 pints

16 ÷ 8 = 2

There are 2 pints of juice in each bottle
