What is a whole number?

A number without a decimal/fractional part or an integer. It is a set of numbers that only include positive integers. This does not include any negative numbers, decimals, or fractions.

Why is this concept useful?

Whole numbers are in all aspects of mathematics; therefore, it is important to have a solid understanding of this concept before moving on to more difficult concepts. Whole numbers are also seen outside of mathematics. Some examples of when you might see them are listed below. Mathematical applications of this concept: Adding and subtracting whole numbers Multiplication and division (without remainders) Length measurement Telling time There are several real life applications for this concept: On the freeway when you need to know the exit number United states dollars are in whole numbers ($1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100) At a sporting event to find the section number

Where does this concept fit into the curriculum?

Grade K - 5

How can we use the concept

We can use this concept by identifying that there isn’t a negative number, fraction, or a decimal. If the number does not have any of those additions, then it is a whole number. This includes the number 0.

Examples:

  • 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10..
  • 2,456
  • 1,923,542,876

Sample Math Problems

Question 1:

Identify the whole number that represents the number of cupcakes in the image below.

Answer: 8 cupcakes

Question 2:

Select the number that is the odd one out - 2457, 3821922, 31.3293, 45985

Answer:

  1. 2,457 ← no decimal, fraction, and it is not negative = whole number
  2. 3,821,922 ← no decimal, fraction, and it is not negative = whole number
  3. 31.3293 ← there is a decima, so this is NOT a whole number
  4. 45,985 ← no decimal, fraction, and it is not negative = whole number

Question 3:

Give the standard form of the number, “three thousand two hundred forty-nine.”
