Multiples

By Vighnesh Hemnani

In this Thinkster Math article, you’ll learn what multiples are, why they are important, how they’re used, simple worked-through worked examples and some problems for you to practice on

Why is this concept useful?

Learning what multiples are and the most common multiples of certain numbers like the multiples of 5 are one of the essential building blocks of mathematics. A neat way to help learn the multiples of common numbers is writing out the multiples in a multiplication chart/times-table.

Where does this concept fit into the curriculum?

Grade 4

How to use this concept?

It is important to note that multiples are a foundational topic in mathematics. The common knowledge of multiples helps in calculating and solving equations faster so in order to be able to apply it when calculating much more complex equations, the base of knowing popular multiples is key. To know/find out a multiple, we can just refer to the definition: it is the result of a number multiplied by another number. For example, in the multiplication below:

6 x 9 = 54

Here 54 is the multiple of the number 6.

Note: the converse could also be said about 9 x 6 = 54, where 54 is the multiple of 9. Focusing on the number 6, we know that 54 isn’t the only multiple of 6 – there are more! So we can find more multiples of the number 6 like so:

6 x 1 = 6

6 x 2 = 12

6 x 3 = 18

6 x 4 = 24

6 x 5 = 30

….

This is just one example of finding multiples of a number, similarly, you can find the multiples of any number.

Interesting fact – 0 is a multiple of every number! This is because whenever you multiply 0 with a number you always get 0.

Sample Math Problems

1. What are the first five multiples of 3?

Answer: The first five multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15.

2. What are the first four multiples of 7?

Answer: The first four multiples of 7 are: 7, 14, 21, 28.

3. From the following list of numbers, write down/circle the numbers that are not a multiple of 9:

34 18 54 31 72 59 9 0

Answer: From the above list of numbers, 34, 31 and 59 are not multiples of 9.

4. From the following list of numbers, write down/circle the numbers that are not a multiple of 4:

14 44 24 12 45 40

Answer:
From the above list, 14 and 45 are the only numbers that are not multiples of 4.
