How Many Quarts in a Liter

By Crystal Greenfield

A liter is a unit used to describe volume in the metric measurement system. A quart is a unit used to describe volume in the U.S. customary measurement system. Since they are both units of volume, it is possible to use a constant conversion factor to find the equivalent volume in the other unit.

Why is this concept useful?

Data collected from different sources will sometimes have different units. Converting all of the data to the same unitary system makes it easier to use.

Where does this concept fit into the curriculum?

Middle and High school

How can we use the concept:

The ratio between liters and quarts is: 1 liter : 1.05668821 quarts.

1.05668821 is a difficult number to calculate with. It can be rounded but the more rounding is used, the less accurate the answer is. Rounding to the nearest hundredth is accurate enough for most purposes. 1.05668821 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 1.06 so the rounded ratio is

1 liter : 1.06 quarts

When measurement ratios are written as fractions, units in the denominators will cancel out the same unit in the numerator. (

22\frac{2}{2}
=1 ;
metersmeters\frac{meters}{meters}
=1) An organizational technique for converting measurements is to write all the needed ratios as fractions. Line up and flip the fractions so that unneeded units are cancelled out and the desired units are left in the numerator.

Problem

Duyen is translating a cookbook from Vietnamese into English to sell it in the United States. She wants to translate the metric measures in the recipe into US customary measurements. A recipe for pho calls for 8 liters of broth. How many quarts of broth will the English recipe need?

Solution

The ratio is

1.06quarts1liter\frac{1.06 quarts}{1 liter}

8 liters x

1.06quarts1liter\frac{1.06 quarts}{1 liter}
= 8.48 quarts

Problem

David is working on a science project. He has collected all of the data and now he needs to analyze the results. When he started analyzing the data he realized that he recorded the water used in the experiment in quarts even though all the other measurements were done in the metric system. He wants all of the measurements to be in the same measurement system. He used 17 quarts of water in the experiment. How should he rewrite the data in liters?

Solution

The ratio is

1.06quarts1liter\frac{1.06 quarts}{1 liter}
, flip so the desired unit is in the numerator
