Multiples of 256

Multiples of 256 are any number that can be divided by 256 without any remainder. In other words, any number that can be split into multiple 256s, without anything extra. Another way to understand multiples is to compare them to counting an object. For instance, I may have one ball, or I may have six balls, but I can’t have 3 and a half balls.

Methods for Finding Multiples:

The most common way to find multiples is to use multiplication. Multiplication of whole numbers always results in multiples of the numbers being multiplied. To find the first few multiples of 256, you could just multiply 256 by 1, then 2, then 3, and so on, until you have as many multiples as you would like. This is shown in the next section.

For younger students that don’t know how to multiply yet, the same result can be found just by counting, or skip-counting. To find multiples of any number, just add the number to itself multiple times. For instance, if you want to find the multiples of 256, start at 256 and keep adding 256 over and over: 256, 512, 768, 1024, and so on. Each of these numbers is a multiple of 256.

There are an endless number of multiples! You can keep using either of these methods to find as many multiples as you would like.

Let’s find the first 10 multiples of 256 by multiplying:

2561=256256 * 1 = 256

2562=512256 * 2 = 512

2563=768256 * 3 = 768

2564=1024256 * 4 = 1024

2565=1280256 * 5 = 1280

2566=1536256 * 6 = 1536

2567=1792256 * 7 = 1792

2568=2048256 * 8 = 2048

2569=2304256 * 9 = 2304

25610=2560256 * 10 = 2560

So, the first 10 multiples of 256 are: 256, 512, 768, 1024, 1024, 1536, 1792, 2048, 2304 and 2560.

Interesting Facts about Multiples

• The primary multiple of any number is itself.

• The result of any multiplication of whole numbers is a multiple of all the numbers being multiplied together. As such, every multiple is also a multiple of another number.

• Every multiple of even numbers will also be even.

• The successive multiples of odd numbers alternate between odd and even numbers.

• You can also find negative multiples of a number by multiplying by negative numbers.
