What is 10 31/10 as a decimal?

Today, we will walk you through how to convert 10 31/10 to a decimal. In this particular guide we’ll show how to use the division method, one of the easiest ways to convert a fraction to a decimal.

Solution: 10 31/10 as a decimal is 13.1

Methods

First step – Making the fraction improper:

The first step to changing 10 31/10 into a decimal is to change it to an improper fraction. To do that, we need to multiply 10 by 10 and add its product to 31 in the numerator to get: 131/10. Now we will attempt to convert 131/10 to a decimal using one of the following methods:

Method 1 – Explanation using the division method:

A fraction is written in terms of two parts: the number on top is called the numerator and the number on the bottom is called the denominator. We can use the division method to solve this question. To get a decimal, simply divide the numerator 131 by the denominator 10:

131 (numerator) ÷ 10 (denominator) = 13.1

As a result, you get 13.1 as your answer when you convert 10 31/10 (or 131/10) to a decimal.

Method 2 – Explanation using the factors of 10 method:

Often times it’s easier to divide a number by powers of 10 (like 10, 100, 1000 etc.) because all you need to do is move the invisible decimal place left by how many zeros you have in the power of 10. The problem is that the denominator sometimes isn’t a power of 10 – like this in problem, 10 is not a power of 10.

So, what do we do? We can convert this fraction into a power of 10! If the denominator is a factor of a power of 10, like 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20, 25, 40, 50 and so on, then we can convert them into a power of 10.

How? Multiply by the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) by the same amount that makes the denominator to a power of 10. To make 10 a power of 10, we need to multiply by 1 (10 * 1 = 10). Now if we multiply the denominator by 1, we also need to multiply the numerator by 1 too:

1311101=13110=13.1\frac{131 * 1}{10 * 1} = \frac{131}{10} = 13.1

And finally, you get 13.1 as your answer when you convert 10 31/10 (or 131/10) to a decimal.
