Multiples of 1

Multiples of 1 are any number that can be divided by 1 without any remainder. In other words, any number that can be split into multiple 1s, without anything extra. Another way to understand multiples is to compare them to counting an object. For instance, I may have one ball, or I may have six balls, but I can’t have 3 and a half balls.

Methods

Methods for Finding Multiples:

The most common way to find multiples is to use multiplication. Multiplication of whole numbers always results in multiples of the numbers being multiplied. To find the first few multiples of 1, you could just multiply 1 by 1, then 2, then 3, and so on, until you have as many multiples as you would like. This is shown in the next section.

For younger students that don’t know how to multiply yet, the same result can be found just by counting, or skip-counting. To find multiples of any number, just add the number to itself multiple times. For instance, if you want to find the multiples of 1, start at 1 and keep adding 1 over and over: 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Each of these numbers is a multiple of 1.

There are an endless number of multiples! You can keep using either of these methods to find as many multiples as you would like.

What are the Multiples of 1?

Let’s find the first 10 multiples of 1 by multiplying:

11=11 * 1 = 1

12=21 * 2 = 2

13=31 * 3 = 3

14=41 * 4 = 4

15=51 * 5 = 5

16=61 * 6 = 6

17=71 * 7 = 7

18=81 * 8 = 8

19=91 * 9 = 9

110=101 * 10 = 10

So, the first 10 multiples of 1 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Interesting Facts about Multiples

• The result of any multiplication of whole numbers is a multiple of all the numbers being multiplied together. As such, every multiple is also a multiple of another number.

• Every multiple of even numbers will also be even.

• The successive multiples of odd numbers alternate between odd and even numbers.

• You can also find negative multiples of a number by multiplying by negative numbers.
