I have heard from a lot of parents asking - What does it take to make my child competitive for the long run? What are the habits you built in your children? Can you help share those habits with us?
So, here it goes! Here are a few practiced at home – and the Diamond Plan is entirely based on these practices – which come highly recommended by researchers at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Univ. of Pennsylvania - among others.
Past failures is how you measure future success. If you are not failing at anything, it most likely means you are not learning anything new.
Be consistent in practicing good habits - do things each day. Create a routine to learn new things every day.
Develop the habit to ask the “why” behind everything. This knowledge helps develop confidence.
Don’t confine learning to only school subjects. Learn about all things around us – in nature. This builds enormous thinking skills.
It’s not always about doing things the hard way. When you study smarter – with tools, planners and logic – making remarkable progress comes easy.
When you think that you are at the point of giving up - that is the point of getting started on an uber successful journey.
Provide Harvard University recommended high-dosage intensive personalized tutoring to your child (at least 4 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each). This should include frequent teacher feedback, data-driven instruction, increased instructional time, and a relentless focus on academic achievement. This will prepare your child to get remarkable progress improvement and set them on a path to success.
A comprehensive Harvard study sorted through almost 200 well-designed experiments in improving education and found that frequent one-to-one tutoring with proven research-based instruction was especially effective in increasing learning rates of students. According to the study, high-dosage tutoring was 20 times more effective than low-dosage tutoring in math.
A substantive research study in Chicago high schools, where students learned between one and two extra years of math, over and above what the typical American high school student learns in one year. One of the things Robert Balfanz of Johns Hopkins, one of the study’s authors, noticed was that the more hours of tutoring a student received, the more academic improvement a student achieved.
In the old way, students typically had no tutoring or only had infrequent or low-dosage (considered to be once or twice a week) tutoring sessions with their tutor.
Students were also typically exposed to mini-group tutoring sessions of 3-5 students per tutor in each session instead of being in strict 1:1 tutoring sessions with a tutor.
Tutors were seldom highly trained in research-driven methods of teaching and motivating students to perform at their best.
Tutors were not assigned to students and sometimes different tutors showed up for each session.
Teachers had limited or no access to data to evaluate how well a student was performing after being in the tutoring sessions.
Each student will get 4 private 1:1 tutoring sessions with a dedicated math tutor each week. This is a total of 200 tutoring sessions in a year for 50 full weeks.
The private tutoring sessions will provide the opportunity for the student to get hyper-personalized attention in addition to assistance with both classwork and homework during the weekly sessions.
Tutors will be highly trained to deploy and use the most advanced research-based methods.
Tutors will have access to deep levels of data-driven insights about each student before and after each tutoring session.
Dedicated, elite tutors are assigned to each student and track student progress on a daily basis.
